According to the World Water Council, over 1.1 billion people around the globe live without sanitary drinking water, including a vast number of pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.  Saphia Lifestyle Beverages has also launched a non-profit organization – Thirst for Life Foundation – whose mission is to pool surplus bottled water and bottled water beverage resources from commercial companies to help provide additional clean drinking water to maternal and fetal health programs in select countries experiencing clean water crises.

How much water do you typically drink on an average day?

Saphia creator and co-founder Gretchen Cook-Anderson understands well from personal experience the benefits of water consumption for pregnant and nursing women.  During her own high risk pregnancy with twin boys (Hunter and Bryce) in 2001, she consumed over 14, 16.9-oz. bottles of water daily for 18 weeks at her doctor’s insistence – consumption which she and her obstetrician attribute to calming her pre-term contractions and postponing labor.   She now spreads the word to friends and acquaintances at every opportunity, touting the advantages of water consumption during pregnancy.

During her own first pregnancy in 2000, Dr. Patterson's obstetrician recommended that she consume at least 10, eight-ounce cups of water per day.  Dr. Patterson did not heed her doctor's counsel, which resulted in the premature delivery of her daughter Alexandra, due to dangerously low levels of amniotic fluid.  Though Dr. Patterson's daughter is now a healthy five-year old, she is now a strong advocate of water consumption as well as intake of vital vitamins and minerals during pregnancy.
